- Praise Tab using tablets to learn
Dwight Williams (left), LIME’s head of products, visits the grades four and five music class where the students are learning to play the piano using a keyboard app on their tablet devices. Dalton Spence (right), music teacher at the school, gives instructions. 1 2 3 > High impact, interactive and targeted learning are some of the values which have been embraced by Patsy Palmer, principal of the Praise Tabernacle Christian Academy, in guiding the young minds who have been put in her charge. Students at ‘Praise Tab’ use iPads and other tablets powered by LIME’s mobile data network to navigate lessons, complete practical activities or do research for school projects as part of their daily routine. “They use it for subjects like French, arithmetic, and social studies and even for music,” says Palmer. “We find that there are many apps that can be incorporated into the learning process and they are so interactive and child-friendly that we have seen where the children now learn faster.” She added: “The classroom is under a lot of competition. The children play with their computers, PlayStations and other games at home and so when they come to school, we have to move with the [...]

- Chinese Kingston Hotel targets 2014 opening
THE Chinese developer of a hotel behind Devon House hopes to start building in May. ZDA Construction Limited’s three-storey business boutique hotel will have about 46 rooms, according to its Deputy General Manager, Gary Zhong. “If all goes well, it shouldn’t take more than 10 months to be completed,” he said. The Bank of China gave funding for the construction, and the hotel will cost US$7 million ($685.6 million), Zhong said. Already, the company has been granted planning permission and environmental permit with stipulated conditions by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA). The initial plan was to have a 56-bedroom hotel with a multi-purpose games room, an open-air party space on the roof, along with a gym, a meeting room, a pool and a restaurant. But, the plans have since been modified to include a restaurant, a meeting room and a pool, according to Zhong. “We took off the fitness club and there will be no roof entertainment,” he said. When the proposal to build the hotel was made last year, the resident of the Canterbury Manor Citizens Association objected to some aspects the development. Residents complained that the hotel is out of character, as most adjoining buildings along [...]
- Destra leads ‘Dutty Mas’ Fête on April 5
The penultimate fête for Bacchanal Jamaica’s 2013 Le Masquerade season is the St Andrew-based J’Ouvert fête and road march, set to take place this Friday, April 5, starting at 10 p.m., at Mas Camp. The ‘dutty mas’ fête, which traditionally proceeds the ‘pretty mas’ road march on Carnival Sunday, and the only one of its kind in Jamaica, will feature a live performance from Trinidad’s ‘Queen of Bacchanal’, Destra Garcia. The paint fest and road march will begin at Mas Camp on Arthur Wint Drive and will turn westerly on Mountain View avenue and right on to Old Hope Road. Revellers will follow Old Hope Road, passing Campion College, turn right on Munroe Road, moving west on to Old Hope Road. From there, revellers will travel down Old Hope Road, making a west turn on Arthur Wint Drive, ending the festivities at Mas Camp. Before the action on the road, Trinidad’s Destra Garcia will bring her eclectic style, fashion and flair to Mas Camp with what is expected to be a high-energy performance of her musical catalogue, spanning more than 10 years. Garcia has worked hard to become the Caribbean’s most requested female soca artiste. She has become known for [...]
- Diddy is hip hop’s richest star
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs – File Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been named the richest hip-hop star for the third year in a row. The rapper has an estimated fortune of $580 million and was recognised in Forbes magazine’s annual list, once again beating Jay-Z ($475 million) to the top spot. His wealth actually primarily comes from non-musical ventures, the majority coming from his eight-figure deal with Diageo’s Ciroc vodka. As well as a huge annual payout, Sean – previously known by his stage name P. Diddy – will receive a nine-figure windfall if the brand is sold. Of the brand, Jack Russo, an equity analyst at Edward Jones & Co, said: “It is one of the fastest-growing brands within vodka. “Consumers are feeling a little bit better about their situation, and with that, they’re willing to spend more on premium products. Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s fortune is largely made up of his 2007 sale of Rocawear ($204 million) and his deal with Live Nation ($150 million). Dr. Dre is in third place on the list with $350 million mainly thanks to his ‘Beats by Dr. Dre’ headphones brand. In 2011, the entrepreneur sold 51 per cent of the business for $300 million, before [...]

- VW Linkup a success
EVEN though it’s in its embryonic stage, Volkswagen Owners of Jamaica embraced new members to the fold at a gathering at Country Farm House in Vineyard Town, Kingston, on Sunday. The event, a celebration of all things Volkswagen, saw close to 40 vehicles at the jam-packed venue ranging from flashy to futuristic as well as cool and classic. The initiative, spearheaded by Jamaica Classic Car Club (JCCC) vice-president and Jamaica Volkswagen Club President Norman Foster, was deemed a success. “So many people came out. And when you see something like this, you just can’t help but feel fulfilled. A dream has come true here today,” Foster told Auto. Volkswagen (VW) lovers and collectors from across the island gathered around to peer into each other’s bonnets, gawking at engines and modifications, comparing each other’s automotive art, and sharing stories. Even children got in on the fun, climbing into dune buggies and pretending to steer them. Owners came to register their names, the make, model, year, and even the colours of their vehicles for entry into the group’s database. The group — which aims to be an arm of the classic car club — garnered support from the JCCC president Nigel McFarlane, [...]

Ricky (Sheldon Shepherd) and Kemala (Nicole Grey) share a romance in the midst of social upheaval in ‘Better Mus’ Come’. 1 2 > After the Saturday screening of Better Mus Come in Times Square, New York, Storm Saulter, the movie’s director, will be the focus of a question-and-answer session. The African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement, which has used its ARRAY label, to distribute the film in the United States, invited Saulter’s Coalition to Preserve Reggae (CPR) to the screening for just that purpose at the AMC 42nd Street Theatre (234 W 42nd St). The movie, which opens on Friday, is the first of ARRAY’s releases, dedicated to multi-platform distribution of black independent film. The film and its distribution is important, not only because of the synergy it reflects, but also because of the role of reggae music in the movie. While there is much said about reggae’s influence around the world, the film acknowledges and documents the impact of the music on Jamaica and, importantly, on a new generation of artisans. According to a release from CPR, “it is imperative that this film gets our full support at this juncture as this support will pave the way for extending the [...]
